I know, right? A band is called American Television, and yet nobody’s ever asked them about their favorite American TV shows. Well, until now. Ahead of the release of their new EP You Are Not Alone, the melodic punk outfit was kind enough to list their favorite shows. In no particular order…
You Are Not Alone will be out this Friday on Smartpunk Records. The EP features six new bangers written to create a sense of community in these dark times, to empower those who feel unseen, and to serve as a reminder for us to work to live, not live to work. How else are you going to find the 23,5 days of nonstop watching you need to get through all the episodes of all these shows!
Wayne
This show captures a young man’s pursuit to retrieve his American muscle car. From blue collar Brockton, MA to Ocala, FL Wayne meets some seedy characters along the eastern seaboard. One flawless season. Bring back Wayne!
The Wire
The inner workings of an American city. Focusing on the Baltimore police, organized crime, the media, and the school system over the length of the show. Power can corrupt anywhere.
Freaks & Geeks
One of the best teen comedies ever. Perfectly encapsulates growing up in an American high school, regardless of time period. Plus, the scene where Nick plays drums along to Rush reminds us all what it’s like being a young musician with dreams of being a rock star.
South Park
One of my favorites because it’s managed to stay relevant for almost thirty years. It takes on the world with humor that’s cynical, full of satire, and outright blatant, with nothing being off-limits.
Home Improvement
This is a show I will watch on repeat forever. I remember watching it with my grandfather when I was probably 6 or 7. The entirety of the show, showing growth in so many aspects, and the campy humor and puns; for me it will never get old. More power!
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Larry David, a rich prick who doesn’t care who he pisses off as long as he gets his way. But, you know, in a funny way.
The Righteous Gemstones
A mega-church run by a bunch of wealthy, entitled sinners who hold themselves above everyone else is about as American as it gets.
Breaking Bad
Health care too expensive? Planning on dying and don’t have much to leave your family? Why not sell meth! The American Dream re-examined.
The Mandalorian
This show revitalized the Star Wars fan base and opened it up to a whole new generation of fans. Best storyline and characters that the Star Wars universe has seen in a while. Plus Grogu is the coolest!
Dexter
The concept of a serial killer killing serial killers is one of the most original stories out there, and the character development has been amazing over a 20-year span from the original to New Blood to Original Sin to Resurrection. And how about that Christian freakin’ Slater?!?
