Before Jade Puget joined AFI ahead of 1999’s Black Sails in the Sunset, he played in several hardcore bands, including youth crew revival outfit Redemption 87, whose sound drew heavily from late-’80s Revelation Records bands.

Now, Puget has reunited with his Redemption 87 bandmates Eric Ozenne - also known as the frontman of The Nerve Agents - and Gary Gutfeld in a new band called Birdlegs. Rounding out the lineup is Ryan Doria of Overexposure and Pressure Cracks.

The band’s debut album, Visions Beyond The Ape Cave, is out now on Revelation Records and finds the foursome channeling the same ’80s youth crew influences that fueled Redemption 87 into something that still sounds urgent today. Is it earth-shatteringly good? No, but it’s a strong throwback to a style you rarely hear done this well anymore.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
