Sometimes you come across an album that makes your head spin. When you put members of bands such as Cave In, Converge and All Pigs Must Die together, chances are they’ll come up with an album that doesn’t simply make your head spin, but rather tears it right off and then leaves your body lying there, convulsing to the beat. Armed with some badass riffs and drum fills so complex you’ll end up with a whiplash just by listening to them, Mutoid Man is that band. And “Bleeder” is that album.

Yes, it’s spazzy, mathy and technical, but it’s also catchy. Normally when someone drops the term ‘progressive’, we shriek and cover our ears in response. But here it works and nicely blurs the lines between hardcore, metal and rock. Check out “Soft Spot In My Skull” for example, which sound like a Bay Area thrash band meets Cave In meets T-Rex (the dinosaur, not the band).

Unfortunately not every single song is equally eye-catching, but that still leaves plenty of headbanging goodness to discover.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
