Album Reviews

Ready for a blast of loud, relentless and in-your-face streetpunk? The Mistakes have got you covered on what is already the band’s fifth full-length. Die Laughing packs 13 songs that range from singalong tunes with poppy elements to cuts bordering on hardcore and everything in between. All of it comes with an aggressive edge, gruff vocals and the kind of basslines that Rancid’s Matt Freeman has patented.
Opener “Battle” is about as subtle as a middle finger shoved in your face, “Elon” is a ska-flecked tune about the richest man and biggest douche in the world, while “Life’s Too Short” offers one of the album’s more melodic moments. That’s a lot of ground to cover in just three songs, but The Mistakes do it with ease.
The Poole, UK based band keeps up the relentless pace with the blistering “Sons” and “Have A Nice Day”, sounds like a punked up version of Sleaford Mods on “Get Cancelled” and show their sensitive side on the acoustic “Get Ready For Hell.” Despite this being the band’s fifth album, I hadn’t heard of these guys before. Turns out I’ve been missing out. They aren’t rewriting the Great Punk Rock Songbook on “Die Laughing,” but this one is a lot of fun. And I imagine it to be even better live.
