The lone trumpet that opens ‘A Knife In The Mud’ may sound like the start of a movie soundtrack, but once the distorted guitars and drums crash in, it’s clear that … And The Mermaid is a very different beast from the Americana-driven Blood Harmony and Drive It Like It’s Stolen. On his seventh solo album, Dave Hause circles back to his punk rock roots and delivers ten songs designed to get your pulse racing.

‘Cellmates’ is an uplifting jolt that works perfectly as a pick-me-up, while ‘Mockingbird Blues’ could easily have slotted onto earlier albums like Devour. Meanwhile, ‘Revisionist History’ feels like the result of locking Hause in a room with IDLES on repeat. Elsewhere, ‘Yer Outta My Hair’ channels a bit of Tom Petty swagger, and ‘Bible Passages’ proves Hause hasn’t completely left his Americana leanings behind.

Over the course of ten tracks, ... And The Mermaid comes at you with a variety of sights and sounds without faltering once.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
