South Australian alternative rock band Gernz have released their new single, “OW!”. Produced, mixed and mastered by Thomas Wilson in Mount Gambier, South Australia, the track draws on the stripped-back, atmospheric sound associated with 1990s alternative rock, with influences including The Breeders, Nirvana and Pixies.

The song takes the familiar experience of stubbing a toe as its starting point, using physical pain as a broader metaphor for the brief emotional setbacks people encounter in everyday life. According to vocalist Liam Brown, the idea began as a joke before developing into a song about how moments of pain can be intense but often pass quickly.

“OW!” combines that concept with loud guitars, an infectious chorus and a deliberately straightforward presentation. While the lyrics can be interpreted literally, the band also leaves room for listeners to find their own meaning in the song.

The single continues Gernz’s approach of pairing accessible, playful songwriting with more reflective themes. The band says the track is intended to work both as a light-hearted song and as a deeper reflection on how people experience and move through difficult moments.

“OW!” is the latest release leading into Gernz’s forthcoming debut EP.
