Album Reviews
Yay, Modern Baseball has a new album out! It’s called “You’re Gonna Miss It All” and it has everything you loved about “Sports” but with even better songs and a better sound. The latter of which is thanks to mastering mastermind Will Yip and engineer Jonathan Low (who has worked with The National as well) and the first is probably simply because two years have passed since “Sports” during which these guys have become better songwriters.
Right off the bat, “Fine, Great” comes with those quirky lyrics and catchy melodies that were all over “Sports” and the vocal delivery still makes me think of The Weakerthans. Another thing that’s still the same is how a Modern Baseball song always sounds like a Modern Baseball song even if they go for pop-punk (“Apartment”), loud power-pop (“Charlie Black”), a bit of twee (“Going to Bed Now”) or something that lingers between folk and punk (“Your Graduation”).
Basically, if you like “Sports”, you’re gonna go nuts for “You’re Gonna Miss It All”. The two relate to one another like that one girl that was kinda cute when you knew her and then run into again a couple of years later only to find out that she turned into a complete knockout.
