MLCD (formerly known as My Little Cheap Dictaphone) is back with “The Smoke Behind The Sound”, already their fourth album. The album opens strong with tracks like “Fire”, “Change In My Heart” and the bouncy “Bitter Taste Of Life”, tracks that prove the seventies and eighties still live on in the French-speaking part of Belgium. The poppy songs sparkle and thrive on subtle drums and analog synths that bring Air to mind, especially during “Change In My Heart” and “Summer In The Dark”. Things take a turn for the worse during the second half with “Hard To Time” and “Not Hype” sounding more like ideas than actual songs. Strong start, weak finish.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
