Black Guy Fawkes, the folk-punk project of Ian Robinson, has announced the release of his fifth full-length record, The Misery Suite, due out September 19 via Asbestos Records (home to The Suicide Machines, Smoking Popes, and Off With Their Heads). Today, Robinson has dropped the album’s latest single, “Glass Houses”, now streaming everywhere. The track features a guest appearance from Lauren Kashan of Sharptooth, whose soaring vocals push the song’s intensity to new heights.

Known for his magnetic stage presence and DIY-rooted ethics, Black Guy Fawkes has carved out a reputation for blending the intimacy of folk with the urgency of punk, winning over audiences alongside Frank Turner, Laura Jane Grace, Violent Femmes, Dave Hause, and Bad Cop / Bad Cop, among others.

Speaking on the record, Robinson reflected on its deeply personal origins:

“Back in January 2023, I started therapy for the first time. After the first year, I began writing a record I thought was going to sound like a cross between Radiohead and Bloc Party. But it didn’t feel right. Then I put on Nirvana’s In Utero—I just loved the guitar sounds so much. Two days later, I wrote the first and final track of the record, and The Misery Suite was born.”

Robinson explains that the album takes its name from the makeshift office he dubbed “the misery suite” while working through early therapy sessions. “This is a record about confronting things I was learning about myself in that first year of therapy, the baggage I walked in with, and the lessons I learned along the way,” he shares.

The project was also made possible through a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council, which Robinson says gave him the freedom to push his sound further and “really have fun” with the process.
