I’m sure Krista Holly Diem means something entirely different when she sings “We’ve become so much bigger” on ‘The Alien Dove,’ but it’s true nonetheless: LAPêCHE’s sound has grown considerably since the release of their debut album.

What began in 2016 as Diem’s solo project has evolved into a full-fledged band with Dave Diem (bass), Drew DeMaio (guitar), and new drummer Colin Brooks (Samiam). On Autotelic, their third full-length, LAPêCHE serve up ten slices of bouncy indie pop-rock, laced with dreamy, ethereal synths and anchored by Diem’s vocals floating effortlessly above it all.

Produced by Alex Newport (At The Drive-In, Bloc Party, Death Cab for Cutie), the album sounds crystal clear, with every element given room to breathe. On songs like ‘Double Knotted’ and the bubbly ‘Happy 4 U’, LAPêCHE truly shine. Elsewhere, ‘Parallel Park’ evokes Belly filtered through a shoegaze haze, while ‘Monsoon’ is pure power-pop bliss.

With Autotelic, LAPêCHE have delivered their strongest offering to date. Bigger, more confident, and undeniably beautiful.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
