Album Reviews

With a handful of EPs and a debut full-length (2022’s ‘Only Constantly’) under their belt, Brooklyn’s Awful Din are back with their sophomore album, ‘Anti Body,’ out now on We’re Trying Records.
Awful Din are being described as emo-punk, but that description doesn’t quite cover it. Over the course of ten songs, they effortlessly jump from the poppy opener that is ‘GTFO My Basement’ and ‘Goodbye Delaware,’ which packs some Irish folk accents, to the string-laden, kinda dramatic ‘Foot Punk’ and the jangle pop of ‘Vietnam’. Lyrically as well, they tackle heady subjects like dissociation, chronic illness and identity erosion, but will just as well throw in a song where the lyrics are made up entirely of Sex In The City quotes.
Yup, it’s pretty hard to pigeonhole Awful Din. Which is cool, but also makes it kinda hard to write a review that makes sense. Bands I thought of while listening to ‘Anti Body’ are New Junk City, The Penske File, The Weakerthans, Against Me! as well as Spanish Love Songs. While not overtly sounding like any of them. It’s a pretty sweet album though, with a lot to uncover.
