Album Reviews

I’m still not quite able to forgive NYC’s Freezing Cold for releasing a song as great as ‘Stuck On Hold’ in 2021 and then keeping us waiting for four long years. I am however one step closer to letting them off the hook now that they have released their sophomore full-length, ‘Treasure Pool,’ out now on Don Giovanni Records.
2019’s ‘Glimmer’ already had plenty to offer even if it showed a band still figuring out their sound. And figure things out they did. ‘Treasure Pool’ finds the three-piece confidently navigating ‘90s alternative and fuzzed out indie rock and coming out the other end with a sound all their own. A sound that complete with breezy synth sounds, woodwinds, three-part harmonies and a little help from Screaming Females’ Marissa Paternoster
Opener ‘Backlight’ is tender and poppy with buzzing guitars, the dreamy ‘Off Season’ packs the unlikely combination of slide guitar and synths and totally gets away with it, while ‘Half Static’ comes at you with propulsive drums, lighter than air guitars and one of the album’s catchiest choruses. And that’s just the first three songs.
There is a lot to unpack in ‘Treasure Pool’. A ton of small and unexpected accents that you’ll miss at first glance, only to discover on repeated listens. And boy, there have already been a lot of repeated listens.
