Indianapolis-based “fake emo” band Summerbruise put out a new single, “Man! I Feel Like A Dumbass!” This track is part of their new full-length record, Infinity Guise, coming out September 19th via SideOneDummy Records. Angsty, brutally honest, and hilarious, this new single is an anthem for anyone who has ever second-guessed their every word, blown their last $10 on regret, or found themselves in a headlock with their own brain. In true Summerbruise fashion, they perfectly ride the line between self-deprecating humor and emotional turmoil. It’s emo poetry for the perpetually overwhelmed, confused, and emotionally hungover.
Mike Newman shared his thoughts on the new single below:
“This is the song that came together the easiest, and all within probably 30 minutes of arriving at the studio to start writing the second half of the record. We were eager to get started, so Mitch just had me start singing some lyrics from my phone while he found chords to go with them. While we were working on that in one room, Stanli was cooking up the lead guitar in another and we wrote most of the song in one go. Tracking was exciting too, because Mitch got to step into a vocal booth for the first time and do some harmonies and backing vocals. It's a small detail in the grand scheme of things, but I think it represents the approach as a whole that he was so eager to step that far outside of his comfort zone. It was so fun watching him realize how well he could sing, in real time, right in front of me.”
Summerbruise started as a smaller project from lead vocalist and lyricist Mike Newman (he/him) back in 2015 and has since grown into a full band made up of Stanli Fryman (she/her) on drums, John Parkison (them/he) on bass, and guitarists Mitch Gulish (he/him) and Cora Kunda (she/her).They now affectionately refer to themselves as Summerbruise 2.0, and under that guise this new record is their first official release as a collaborative unit.
Since the beginning, their music has been both haunted and propelled by death, most notably by two separate and significant occurrences. The first was the death of Mike’s dad in January2017 and the second was the death of his close friend some eight months later. Both occurring just after the release of Summerbruise’s first release, the seven-track Bummer Vacation. Following that album was 2022’s The View Never Changes and 2024’s Better Vacation which garnered an outpouring of support from fans.
Newman’s deep, personal fear of death is very much present within the fabric of this album. Recorded at producer Nick Starrantino’s Deadend Studio on Long Island, these 12 tracks play tug-of-war between Newman’s own quirky vulnerability and the steady guiding hand of his musical co-conspirators.
