As soon as Among Legends unleash opening track “H/A/C/K,” it’s immediately obvious that they are no longer the same band behind 2022’s more carefree pop-punk record Take Good Care. While that release was certainly well worth your time, Lose My Grip unveils a leaner, meaner sound that suits the band exceptionally well. It’s a sound that has been sharpened by steady touring across Canada and the United States, while significant lineup changes forced the band to rebuild itself from the ground up.

The results speak for themselves across the entire tracklist. Tracks like “Back Again” and “Hollow” channel The Menzingers in the best possible way, but with an added, fiercer edge. Meanwhile, “Familiar Fiction” packs an exquisite chorus, easily one of the best in recent memory. Or mine, at least. The momentum continues as “Floating Here For Years” picks up the pace, handing off to the Bad Religion-esque energy of “Open Wide,” which shifts the album into an even higher gear. The band takes a stand alongside guest vocalist Laura DeRocchis on “Band Dudes Fuck Off,” throws a touch of country twang into “What’s It Gonna Be,” and rounds out the record seamlessly with the aptly named “The Last Time.”

Throughout Lose My Grip, Among Legends manage to tick a whole lot of different boxes. What is constant throughout the album is the excellent songwriting, raw energy, and infectious hooks.
