Punk rock veterans Squirtgun are back! Let that soak in for a bit. After a 22-year recording hiatus, we are beyond psyched to premiere the band's brand new lyric video for their first new track in over two decades, 'Sunflowers'. Check out the lyric video - made by Edd Stockton, known for his animation work on major projects like the Stranger Things stage adaptation - below.
The new single marks not just a musical return, but is also a deeply personal tribute. Based on the true story of Mario Calvi, an anti-fascist resistance fighter in Italy who was tragically killed by retreating Nazi soldiers—unaware the war had ended—just steps away from his home and his mother, the song carries profound emotional weight for bassist and producer Mass Giorgini (Screeching Weasel, Common Rider, and producer for Rise Against, Alkaline Trio). Calvi was engaged to Giorgini’s great-aunt and has long been remembered as part of his family’s oral history. “Writing and producing this song was deeply personal, and I’m incredibly proud of how it turned out,” says Giorgini.
Recorded by what the band affectionately calls the “Supersoaker” lineup, 'Sunflowers' finds Giorgini reuniting with Kevin Sierzega (Teen Idols, Bullets to Broadway) on lead vocals, Dan Panic (Screeching Weasel, Riverdales, Queers, Avengers, Groovie Ghoulies) on drums and backing vocals, Zac Damon (Screeching Weasel, Big in Japan, Zoinks!) on guitar and backing vocals, Giorgini on bass, backing vocals, and production. And to top it all off, original guitarist (and Mass' brother) Flav Giorgini also plays guitar on the song.
The release of the new song coincides with the band's return to the stage for their first show in six years at the Punk Rock Raduno festival in Bergamo, Italy - which happens to be the same region where Mario Calvi was born and died - on July 18. The track will also appear on the Raduno compilation, as well as being released as part of a 2-song UV printed 12" on Pirates Press Records.
With a full album on the horizon and a label deal nearly finalized, this powerful lyric video premiere is just the beginning of Squirtgun’s long-awaited second act. Stay tuned and turn it up!
