Kapitan Korsakov is back. They hit the studio with none other than Steve Albini, who has recently seen his share of Belgian bands thanks to the likes of Cocaine Piss and Gruppo Di Pawlowski, and recorded “Physical Violence Is The Least Of My Priorities” in less than a week.
I was kinda hoping for an uppercut like “stuff&such”, but KKK’s new album is a lot tamer and… well, kind of underwhelming. Opening track “Caramelle” sounds like a grunge track that grew up and got a day job. Meanwhile “Very Friendly Fire” and “Suicide Limp” try to whip up the madness of their early days, but end up sounding weird for the sake of it. The piano ballad that is “Hearts Too Hard” looks as out of place as a nudist at a costume party and “Spitting Over The Edge Together” is a whiny cut that doesn’t seem to go anywhere until it manages to redeem itself with a noisy climax.
Luckily, there are points of light as well. Although it might be strange to refer to the 7-minute long descent into hell that is “Rabid Ghawazi Shuffle” as a point of light. Or “Strobo Stripper”, a groove-driven cut that plows forward while constantly chasing the needle in the red. Another highlight comes in the form of the surprisingly melodic “Midnight Gardens”, a song that starts off fragile only to then be ripped apart in its distortion-driven finale.
“Physical Violence Is The Least Of My Priorities” is an album that has its strengths, but unfortunately those don’t outnumber the less than stellar moments.
