Black Guy Fawkes' fifth record, The Misery Suite, sees release September 19 via Asbestos Records (The Suicide Machines, Smoking Popes, Off With Their Heads).
Black Guy Fawkes (aka. Ian Robinson) is a magnetic force in the realm of folk punk singer-songwriters, with ethics deeply-rooted in the DIY music scene. With a unique and captivating sound, he weaves together the threads of heartfelt folk music and the raw, energetic spirit of punk to create a truly memorable experience as proven during dates supporting the likes of Frank Turner, Laura Jane Grace, Violent Femmes, Dave Hause, Bad Cop / Bad Cop, and many more.
About the album, Robinson says, "Back in 2023 in January I started therapy for the first time. After the first year, I started writing a record that I thought was going to be a cross between Radiohead and Bloc Party. But, I later realized on that felt wrong. I put on Nirvana’s In Utero, and I just love the guitar sounds so much and that record in general. I think two days later I wrote the first and final track of the record and The Misery Suite was born.
"The Misery Suite itself is what I called my office at the time because I was sitting in there either brooding or having therapy sessions on my laptop and it was a way for me to get out what I needed to at the time.
This is a record about confronting things that I was learning about myself in that first year of therapy, the baggage I walked in with, and the lessons I learned along the way.
"Another important thing about this record too is that I received a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council and that was a big push for me to go extravagant with this and really have fun."
