Punk band The Overjoyed have announced their new self-titled album, set for release on 20 February. Blending a Bay Area punk aesthetic with an anthemic pop sensibility, the Athens-formed band channel melody through grit, capturing the restless energy of disenfranchised European youth with a sound that is as confrontational as it is infectious.

The new self-titled, self-produced album marks a clear evolution in the band’s sound. Moving away from the cleaner, 90s punk influence of 2019's Aced Out, the record leans into dirtier, mid-tempo power-pop territory, with heavier use of reverb, rawer vocals, fast drumbeats, and a more pronounced rock’n’roll edge. The 2023 EP Pressurepop acted as a bridge between eras, hinting at the direction now fully realised.

Speaking of the album opener, Leo (vocals) says, “The reason ‘Can’t Write Music’ is the opening of this album is self-explanatory. I was in a really dark place a couple of years ago, struggling with self-identity, drugs, a break-up… all while in parallel I was living in a world recovering from a world-wide epidemic and a social-political mass hysteria. Whilst many people used this opportunity to write music, I couldn’t. I still haven’t recovered from this block 100%. So I wrote this song and completed it in just an evening. I like that irony “

Unveiling a whole host of new songs, ‘Spark’ stands out on the record. Talking of the new track, they say, “The lyric “You say noise annoys but me I don’t mind” pay homage to The Buzzcocks as both sayings are song titles of theirs but also explain what I wanted to say. The chorus is also a bit influenced by them.” 

Recorded at the band’s own Buduzi Studios in Athens and produced by The Overjoyed themselves, the album was mixed by Marios Adamopoulos and mastered by Christian Wright at Abbey Road Studios, resulting in a gritty yet refined sonic palette.

This is also the most collaborative release in the band’s history, with all members contributing equally to songwriting and arrangements. The album features Vangelis Dimos on drums, Thanos Manolopoulos on bass and backing vocals, Stef Moysidis on guitars and backing vocals, and Leo Overjoyed on vocals and guitars.

After years of touring and steady growth, The Overjoyed are entering a new phase. This release marks the opening chapter of their next era. They conclude, “This record is both a new chapter for the band and a cultivation of our previous work, our influences, us growing up, changing and evolving. We can't wait to share it with the world cause we are really fucking proud of this one.”
