The Overjoyed pack an unmistakable Bay Area Punk aesthetic. This combined with an anthemic pop-sensibility, they are gargling up a concoction in their mouths just to spit it right back at you through the snotty lens of disenfranchised European youth. Their new single, ‘Don’t Listen!’ tackles mental health studs-up – a breakneck yet bubblegum piece of power pop, inspired by Bad Nerves, Radioactivity & Green Day. Following a recent show with Green Day, the band release their new single ‘Don’t Listen!’ right before a big announcement.
Starting out as a note to his younger self, Leo Overjoyed (vocalist) wrote the song about the terrifying moment when you confront your own demons. It’s fast and unapologetic- to mimic the headspace they were in when they wrote it. “This song is pure instinct and we didn’t overthink this one. Punk energy, powerpop hooks, and a lot of emotion packed into two and a half minutes,” he begins. “‘Don’t Listen!’ is what happens when you stop filtering your thoughts and let the truth come out loud.”
Recorded entirely at The Overjoyed’s own Buduzi Studios in Athens and produced by the band themselves, the track was mixed by Marios Adamopoulos and mastered by Christian Wright at Abbey Road Studios, bringing a gritty yet polished edge to the group’s evolving sound.
The new sound builds on the dirtier, mid-tempo power-pop direction hinted at in their 2023’s Pressurepop EP, marking a shift from the more polished 90s punk of 2019’s Aced Out. This latest effort features a broader collaboration among band members, with Vangelis Dimos (drums), Thanos Manolopoulos (bass, backing vocals), Stef Moysidis (guitars, backing vocals), and Leo Overjoyed (vocals, guitars) all contributing more equally than ever before.
Formed in Athens, The Overjoyed debuted in 2011 with their EP 32, followed by full-length albums Boomdoggle (2016), Aced Out (2019), and Pressurepop (2023). Known for their high-energy shows and ironic name and contrasting upbeat music with emotionally complex lyrics, the band has toured extensively, playing in the UK, Europe, Japan, Spain, Portugal, and Turkey.
They’ve previously supported punk icons like Green Day and The Offspring and appeared at major festivals including Release Festival, Ejekt Festival, Manchester Punk Festival, KNRD Fest, and Vive Le Punk Rock Festival.
After years of relentless touring and evolution, The Overjoyed are poised to break bigger than ever. With a new album on the horizon and a dream support slot with Green Day now under their belts, The Overjoyed are entering a new story- and this is just the opening chapter.
