On their new single, “Nevermind The Dog,” Ways Away take aim at the destructive power systems leading the world today and the sliver of hope that something can change. The song blends the band’s punk rock grit with melodic guitars and a shout-along style chorus, which fits perfectly alongside the performance driven music video.
Produced by Beau Burchell (Saosin), the song marks the latest in a string of standalone singles from the band following the release of their 2020 self-titled album (Other People Records). Ways Away’s members pack a notable rock resume, comprised of guitarist Sergie Loobkoff (Samiam, Knapsack, Racquet Club), vocalist/guitarist Jesse Barnett (Stick to Your Guns, Wish You Were Here), drummer Jared Shavelson (BoySetsFire, The Hope Conspiracy), and bassist Ian Smith (Racquet Club).
Speaking on the meaning behind the track, Barnett commented:
“‘Never Mind The Dog’ is a song about being completely and utterly disgusted and fed up with the world at large. While it becomes harder and harder to just live your life without having to give so much of it away to other people to build their dreams upon our backs, the only hope I have left is an admittedly slow moving but powerful class consciousness of working people who are naive enough to believe we can change things. It’s the only thing that any of us should be thinking about in my opinion and we should be fighting this greedy climate killing system of never ending profit accumulation through every possible avenue we can.”
