After having helped to put post-punk on the map in the 1970s, Wire have since continued to release album after album at their own pace. And lately they have been on a roll. There was the self-titled album two years ago, last year’s “Nocturnal Koreans” and now they are back already with “Silver/Lead”. Too much? Hell no.

40 years into the band’s history, they have their sound down pat. And rather than making drastic stylistic changes, they seem to enjoy exploring the details of their sound. I still have no idea what they are singing out most of the time, but that’s okay. Because by now they are masters at sculpting repetitive rhythms that stay interesting, letting fuzzy guitars waver in and out of focus and subtly introducing beautiful melodies before locking into a groove again. They are both pop and punk, only without actually being either.

Not sure if that makes sense. Just take my word for it that “Silver/Lead” is another intriguing album, one that you can lose yourself in and that comes with drop dead gorgeous songs like “Short Elevated Period” and “Sonic Lens”. I hope they keep ‘em coming!

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
