San Diego’s Watashi Wa Dance Party claims to be influenced by anime and j-punk like Dustbox, Keytalk, and Shank. Now, I don’t know the first thing about anime or j-punk so I’ll have to take their word for it. I do hear some Hi-Standard wackiness in cuts like ‘Mio’ and ‘Halle’ though with early Blink-182 mixed in because… you know, why not. ‘My Lava Lamp’ on the other hand sounds like Set Your Goals meets Atom & His Package.

It’s all very fast, technically solid and highly melodic… and also a bit much for me. The amount of riffs, rhythm changes, backup vocals, occasional keyboards and fast-as-fuck drums can be hard to keep up with. And while ‘Skate Pop Suicide’ comes with just six songs, I felt kinda drained afterwards. Then again, I’m old.

Track listing:

  1. Daylight
  2. Mio
  3. Really Over
  4. Halle
  5. Ruminating
  6. My Lava Lamp

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
