In Vain is at it again! “Aenigma” is already the band’s third album by this self-proclaimed extreme prog band. You’ll find a little bit of everything on here ranging from acoustic folk to melodic black metal and death metal. There’s some Old Man’s Child lingering around here as well as a fair amount of Opeth. One thing all of the songs have in common is that they are epic and bombastic, loaded with keys, riffs, amazing vocal performances and an overall intensity that keeps you glued to the speakers until the final notes of “Floating On The Murmuring Tide” have rung out. Hell, they even get away with incorporating a saxophone into a couple of their songs.

Kudos to In Vain for pulling off this wide variety of styles with the help of producer Jens Bogren (Opeth,…). Solid album!

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
