Not quite ready to retire and move to Florida just yet, Chicago indie-emo outfit Retirement Party is back after a two-year hiatus. How we know that? Because they just released a new 4-song EP called ‘Nothing To Hear Without A Sound’. A title you can get quite philosophical about if you are so inclined. Because if there is no sound, is there still “hearing,” or does hearing only exist when there is something to perceive? And is silence itself a kind of sound, or is it only the absence of sound? And is “nothing to hear” truly nothing, or is it a hidden fullness? Wow, so many questions and now I am already three songs into the EP without actually having heard anything. Let’s start over.

Now a solo project led by Avery Springer, the EP packs four songs worth of twinkly emo guitar riffs and a widened melodic streak compared to previous Retirement Party releases. And while it sounds like a full band, it really is a solo effort with Springer handling all instruments except for the drums. Not sure how she will handle this in a live setting, but the EP definitely makes me curious what will be next for Retirement Party.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
