Florida’s Protagonist is back! Their new 5-song EP is called “Jean Jackets In June” and was recorded with none other than The Bouncing Souls’ Pete Steinkopf.

Opening track “Oklahoma” starts off mellow enough, before bursting wide open in the kind of fast-paced punk rock song that I had no problem getting into thanks to solid riffs and melodic vocals. The next three tracks continue down the same path, with “Titan” as the standout cut, starting off all fierce before settling on a nice driving pace towards the end. “Let’s Get It” is more of a mid-paced song that serves as a particularly sweet transition into the title track, which shows a different side of Protagonist with a more melancholy sound that I would love to hear more of in the future.

Whereas the band already wasn’t slouching on previous releases, “Jean Jackets In June” sees Protagonist stepping up their game. If this is any indication of things to come, we’re going to be in for a treat when their new full-length comes around.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
