With the Truckers on a break, Patterson Hood felt the time was right to write his first book. It would be a lesser period in his life where he moved to Memphis after his band split up and he got divorced. Oh yeah, his car got stolen as well.

Hood didn’t get to finish his book but the song lyrics on the other hand just kept on coming and led to the good man’s third solo album, beautifully entitled “Heat Lightning Rumbles In The Distance”. Is it really a solo album if you get the help of your entire band along with your dad on bass and Centromatic’s Will Johnson and Scott Danbom?

Whatever… as long as it leads to gems like the songs on here, I personally don’t care. They all gently trickle along and it’s nice to hear Hood when he’s not  yelling over three guitars for once. I don’t know if he’ll ever finish a book, but as a singer/songwriter we most definitely can’t write him off just yet.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
