I was kinda late to the party with this one. Oklahoma City’s Don’t Make Ghosts released “Death Ride” a couple of months ago, but I somehow completely missed out on it. If you haven’t heard of these guys either just yet, then do yourself a favor and check out “Death Ride”. You will not be disappointed by Don’t Make Ghosts take on melodic punk rock with some other stuff thrown into the mix.

About ten seconds into opening track “Upside Of Sorrow”, they had me thinking about how Bob Mould’s day was going, while “Wrecking” and “Pine Box” have a slight No Motiv vibe going on while the latter also reminded me of Iron Chic thrown at some point. I’m really digging these songs that are instantly familiar and upbeat as hell in spite of dealing with some pretty heavy subject matter like depression and losing someone you love.

Even though “Death Ride” comes with just five songs, it feels like a very complete release that is as energetic and melodic as it is earnest and heartfelt. Seeing as I am a bit of a prick with a need to focus on the negative, I do wish they will add just a tad more variation in the vocal melodies next time around. But considering this is just their debut EP, I’m pretty sure we will be hearing a lot more from Don’t Make Ghosts in the future.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
