While listening to “Climax” you won’t be able to help yourself… you’ll think of Sisters Of Mercy, Killing Joke, Joy Division, Morrissey, Danzig and Echo & The Bunnymen. This Finnish outfit takes all of the gloom and doom from these acts and couples it to riffs… big riffs. Add a solid production job by Converge’s Kurt Ballou and you not only have an unlikely collaboration but also a highly enjoyable album that is filled with gothy anthems.

Once you get over the silliness of song titles such as “The Wind Blows Through Their Skulls”, “Surf The Apocalypse” and “Nuclear Winter”, you’ll find a batch of solid post-punk/new wave songs that come with thumping basslines, potent riffs drenched in reverb and choruses so big they only fit in arenas. Meanwhile vocalist Kvohst croons his way over the pounding drums and jagged chords, delivering brilliant lines such as ‘When the blood starts to rush, I've got a genocidal crush’.

I’m not sure how serious they are about it all and frankly, I don’t really care. Not when the tunes are this good. If you are looking for a soundtrack for your next apocalypse-themed party, you’ve got a winner in your hands with “Climax”.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
