Yes, it’s only October, but that hasn’t stopped Dustin Kensrue from tapping into the holiday spirit early. That Spirit of Christmas finds the Thrice frontman wrapping a 10-song set in a warm retro-soul jacket, blending eight covers – ranging from the beaten-to-death “White Christmas” to lesser-known seasonal gems – with two originals. Well, technically one and a half: an updated take on the title track from his 2008 holiday album, This Good Night Is Still Everywhere, alongside one brand-new cut. That song, “Joy Lives Here,” originally started as a bit of spec writing for the Hallmark Channel before Kensrue pivoted to capture the genuine holiday vibe around his own house. Turns out it wasn’t what Hallmark was looking for, but it makes for a genuinely solid tune.
As for the misses? “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm” gives off more Hawaiian luau energy than cozy Christmas cheer, and I doubt anybody was actively rooting for yet a cover of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” even if Kensrue’s stripped-back rendition makes it surprisingly stomachable.
Was this album strictly necessary? Probably not. Is it entertaining? Sure. There are more than enough charming cuts here to stuff your stocking with once the holidays actually roll around.
