Boston, Massachusetts-based punk/indie outfit Little Low are back with their new single, “Underrated Heartache”. The song won’t be out on Sell The Heart Records until tomorrow, but you can already stream it below.
“I wrote this song about the end of a friendship a few years back,” says the band’s vocalist Christine Atturio. “Originally written as an acoustic song in open C tuning, it was a little darker and sadder than the version we have now. Whenever I played it at acoustic shows and mentioned the topic of friendship breakups, there was always at least one person who would come up to me and say that they related to the strange difficulties of navigating the end of a close personal relationship when there were no romantic ties associated.”
The song name comes from a Rupi Kaur poem that inspired the lyrics. The poem mentions there are no songs or books to turn to during the end of a friendship and how the loss of a friendship is a much slower and quieter type of grief, but a loss nonetheless. As a band, Little Low tried a few different iterations of the song, eventually finding their stride in a much pop-punkier version than the original without changing the original lyrics or structure. The song was recorded during February of 2026 with Kyle Paradis at New Alliance in Somerville MA.
With their introspective lyrics, twinkly and melodic guitars, and heart-on-sleeve delivery, the band draw inevitable comparisons to emo pioneers like The Get Up Kids, Hey Mercedes, and Jimmy Eat World. Simply put, Little Low deliver a cathartic and hook-filled sound that is equally reverent of its forefathers while bringing to the mix some magic that is unmistakably their own.
