Album Reviews
When a college radio station out of Columbia, Missouri, asked Alex Chilton a question, they never expected that it would actually turn into a reunion show. Yet that is exactly what happened. Nearly 20 years after Big Star called it a day, Chilton along with drummer Jody Stephens and Posies’ Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer rocked their hearts out and ended up playing a killer show. Not only do the Big Star originals resonate as strongly as on the band’s hugely underappreciated albums, the covers of T. Rex’ “Baby Strange” and Todd Rundgren’s “Slut” ring just as loud.
Rather than trying to live up to the expectations that come with nostalgia, Big Star played a show that sounds as if there never was a 20 year gap between this show and the one before it. And luckily for us, someone in attendance was smart enough to hit the record button when these guys plugged in.
