Privacy policy

Last updated: August 18, 2026

We value your privacy and handle your personal data with care. This Privacy Policy outlines what information we collect, why we collect it, and your rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

What Data We Collect & Why

A. Rating System

When you submit a score using our rating module, we do not ask for or store any personal data (such as your name or email address). To prevent spam and double votes, we use the following privacy-friendly mechanisms:

  • Local Storage: A tiny functional key is saved in your browser’s Local Storage solely to remember that you have already voted on a specific page.
  • Rate Limiting: Your IP address is briefly processed in memory to generate a temporary, hashed (anonymized) identifier to prevent automated bot abuse. We do NOT store your raw IP address in our database.

B. Contact Form

If you send us a message via our contact form, we ask for your name and email address so we can read and reply to your inquiry.

Data Retention: This information is stored in our email inbox only for as long as necessary to address your message. We do not use these details for marketing purposes.

C. Website Analytics

To understand how visitors interact with PunkRockTheory and improve the site, we use Google Analytics. This service gathers data on browsing behavior, such as pages visited, time spent, and device type. Google Analytics is configured to be privacy-friendly (including IP address anonymization).

Third-Party Sharing: This data is transmitted to and stored by Google on their servers. We do not permit Google to use Analytics data collected from PunkRockTheory for other Google services.

D. Embedded Content (YouTube, Spotify, Bandcamp, SoundCloud)

Articles on PunkRockTheory frequently include embedded content (such as videos or audio players). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor had visited the third-party website directly. These third-party platforms may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, particularly if you have an account and are logged into that service. We do not control the privacy practices of these external services.

Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. We only share information with third parties when necessary for operating our website (e.g., hosting providers or security services) or to comply with legal obligations.

Data Security

We take data protection seriously and implement appropriate security measures (such as SSL/HTTPS encryption) to prevent unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or alteration of your data. If you believe your data is not properly secured, please contact us using the information below.

Your Data Rights

Under the GDPR, you have the right to access, rectify, or erase your personal data. You also have the right to withdraw consent or object to the processing of your data by PunkRockTheory.
To request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data, please use the contact details below. We will respond to your request within 30 days.
