On “Adult Moods”, Brooklyn’s Adult Dude sound like a band that was cryogenically frozen back in the 90ies and then took until now to thaw. The songs that are on here reek of Superchunk and Dinosaur Jr. with a whiff of Soul Asylum thrown in as well. Oh, and let’s not forget about Built To Spill and Jets To Brazil. We could keep going on here because these dudes wear their influences on their sleeves just as proudly as that gym jock wearing a wifebeater to show off his tribal tattoos. Adult Dude has better taste though.

Most bands like to start their album off strong. Not so with Adult Dude who seem to take a while before they truly get going. I’m not saying “Junior Junior” and “80MPH” are bad song, but they don’t really leave much of an impression. By the time you get to “Riff Dog”, “New Son Gay” and “Marinara Veins” though, that’s where “Adult Moods” becomes the gift that keeps on giving. From there on out, it’s a smooth ride all the way to Slackerville right up until the final notes of “Midnight Theme” ring out. They might not have the most original sound out there, but they sure as hell know how to pay homage.
