The all-female quartet that is Warpaint are back with a new album, a self-titled one. Which usually means that a band is heading for new directions or is trying to reinvent itself. Not so much here… everything you loved about 2010’s “The Fool” is still here. Stripped down guitar lines, sparse yet efficient use of melody and rhythms that invoke blurred images of slow-motion dancing.

One thing that did change is that this time around, the song comes first. While pretty much every single track on here still comes with an unexpected twist, the ladies never take their eyes off the finish line. That’s probably largely thanks to producer Flood who pushed the band to the next level according to the Warpainters themselves.

What you end up with here is some wickedly moody post-punk, slightly defiant yet always beautiful. “Feeling Alright” is one of those songs that you’ll be blaring through the speakers with the windows of your car rolled down. “Biggy” on the other hand whips up images of fallen leaves rustling around you. Or “Drive”, a track that builds up slowly with toy synth sounds to something to something that is outright impressive.

It doesn’t really matter what time of year you’ll listen to “Warpaint”… you’ll fall in love regardless of the season.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
