Whereas most bands would be happy enough writing either a solid pop album or an exciting indie rock album, Allison Weiss simply did both and called it “Say What You Mean”. Hot on the heels of the “Making It Up” EP, Weiss shows us again why she is one of the most exciting newcomers on the scene.

All of the songs here come with great hooks, catchy choruses and show off Weiss’ pop sensibilities. On top of that she knows how to write good lyrics that are honest and heartfelt and come with just the right amount of self-deprecating humor. Granted, songs like “Nothing Left”, “How To Be Alone” and “Hole In Your Heart” won’t make you happy but at least they sound happy go lucky enough to not end up depressed. But even if you are, Weiss makes it clear that there is a light at the end of the tunnel with closing track “I’ll Be Okay”.

I’m glad for her even though the asshole in me hopes she’ll get her heart broken again so she’ll make another album that’s as good as “Say What You Mean”.

Lacking the talent to actually play in a band, Tom decided he would write about bands instead. Turns out his writing skills are mediocre at best as well.
